Aggressive Wang sets the mark early on at SJM Macao Open

Chinese-Taipei’s Wang Wei-hsuan, playing some of the best golf of his career, fired a five-under-par 65 to take the clubhouse in the SJM Macao Open today – finding Macau Golf & Country Club very much to his liking.

Poosit Supupramai from Thailand is second, after a 66, while American Brian Harman, Daniel Van Tonder from South Africa, Bangladesh’s Siddikur Rahman and Chonlatit Chuenboonngam from Thailand all carded 67s, after the morning session finished.

“It’s a short course and I can attack most holes with my driver,” said Wang, whose brother Wang Wei-hsiang is also a Tour pro.

“I can play aggressively, get close to most of the greens and make birdie. Just missed one fairway, on five, where I hit a cart path and dropped a shot. It was windy at the beginning so had to stay patient.”

Wang, aged 25, has been in fine form in his last three events: he tied for 13th in the Mandiri Indonesia Open, was equal ninth in the Yeangder TPC, and also joint 13th in the Mercuries Taiwan Masters at the weekend.

It is his best run of results on the Asian Tour and credits new coaches this year for his success.

“I have been seeing Joe Thiel in the US and Jimmy Chang in Taiwan – really been working on my short game. I am feeling very comfortable with my game.”

He started on the back nine, made birdies on 13, 15 and 18. More birdies followed on one and three, before his bogey on the fifth was dealt with by a birdie on seven.

Poosit, who also began on the back nine, stormed through at the end brilliantly making birdie on five of his last six holes.

South African Jbe Kruger, winner of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters at the weekend, is in a group of players 70.

Half the field are still out on the course, including defending champion Min Woo Lee from Australia, who is playing with Asian Tour number one John Catlin – winner of the International Series Macau here at Macau Golf & Country Club in March.
