January 18: In the latest segment of Reflections, Prom Meesawat talks about a successful season in 2012 where he missed only two cuts from out of 24 appearances on the Asian Tour and finished sixth on the Order of Merit. He hopes to add a long awaited second victory under his belt in the 2013 Asian Tour season with his new found confidence.
Can you reflect on the 2012 season?
It has been a very good season for me. I had a good start in India and had some good finishes in the big Asian Tour events. I lost in a play-off at the SAIL-SBI Open but I’m still happy with the outcome. I also had the opportunity to play with other world class players at the CIMB Classic and WGC-HSBC Champions. I was consistent for the whole season and that’s the best part of it.
What was the highlight for you?
My highlight was at the WGC-HSBC Champions because I could hang on to the top of the leaderboard among the stars of the game (Prom finished tied 11th). I showed that Asian players can still be around in world-class tournaments.
What was the low point for you?
It must be the first Asian Tour event of the year at the Zaykabar Myanmar Open. I made the cut but finished almost last! It was disappointing because everyone wants a fast start. Luckily, I played well after that.
If you could re-hit one shot from last season, what would it be?
My second shot in regulation play on the last hole at the SAIL-SBI Open. I hit it into the rough and couldn’t hit it close to the green. If I could hit it on the fairway, I would have had a chance to win the tournament.
What was your favourite tournament last year?
The WGC-HSBC Champions in China.
What have you learned about yourself in 2012?
I played with many top stars and I’ve learned to be more confident in my game and my shots. I must not doubt my ability when I try to shape my shots. I have to bring that mentality into tournaments.
What will you practice during the off season?
I’ll practice on my shot-making abilities. I want to be more confident in every type of shots that I can hit.
Who do you think will be the next star on the Asian Tour in 2013?
Arnond Vongvanij. He is a steady and good player.
Will you be going anywhere during the off season?
I’ll be going to Maldives with my wife. We never take time for holiday so it will be a nice break.

Hua Hin, Thailand, January 18: Rashid Khan of India kept up the chase for a Qualifying School Final Stage spot by posting a two-under-par 70 in the third round of the First Stage Section B on Friday.
The talented Indian trailed the penultimate round leaders Matt Johnston of Canada and Australian amateur Daniel Bringolf by two shots at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club.
Overnight leader Johnston shot a 76 while Bringolf carded a 74 to lead the chasing pack on seven-under-par 209 while Khan shared third place with Chase Wright of the United States and Neil Reilly of England.
At the Springfield Royal Country Club, Bryce Easton of South Africa and French amateur Lionel Weber shared the lead for the third straight day following matching one-under-par 71s.
They lead over former European Tour player Pelle Edberg of Sweden, who shot a 74, by four shots on 13-under-par 203 while Jake Redman of South Africa was third after registering a 71.
After four rounds, the top 15% players from each venue will qualify for the all-important Final Stage which will be held at Imperial Lakeview and Springfield Royal next week.
The top-40 and ties from the Final Stage will earn playing rights on the new 2013 Asian Tour season.
Players who play in the Qualifying School are also eligible to play in the Asian Development Tour (ADT) which will be afforded with Official World Golf Ranking points starting this season.

Hua Hin, Thailand, January 17: India’s Rashid Khan, Pelle Edberg of Sweden and Australian Kunal Bhasin are among those who kept their Asian Tour cards bid alive in the second round of the Qualifying School First Stage Section B on Thursday.
However, the story of the day belonged to Matt Johnston of Canada who posted a six-under-par 66 for a two-shot lead over Australian amateur Daniel Bringolf at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club.
Johnston registered an 11-under-par 133 total while highly rated Khan, aiming for a spot in the Qualifying School Final Stage presented by Sports Authority of Thailand for the third consecutive year, was a further eight shots back in tied eighth place.
A total of 83 players made the halfway cut at Imperial Lakeview with the cut set at six-over-par 150.
At the Springfield Royal Country Club, French amateur Lionel Weber and South African Bryce
Easton kept their noses in front for the second straight day.
The duo fired matching three-under-par 69s to lead on 12-under-par 132 while former European Tour player Edberg, who registered a 64, was a further shot back.
After losing his Asian Tour card in 2012, Bhasin is aiming for a swift return on the region’s elite circuit as he shot a 70 for tied 11th place.
A total of 81 players made the halfway cut which was set at six-over-par 150.

Kuala Lumpur, January 16: Masanori Kobayashi’s career is soaring to new heights on the Asian Tour which mirrors the first golf shot he struck.
Like most Japanese teenagers, Kobayashi aspired to become a professional baseball player but switched allegiance to golf when his uncle introduced him to the game when he was 13.
Kobayashi needed to strike only one shot at the driving range for his fate to be sealed. “It was when I hit the golf ball for the first time. I hit it very well and the ball flew further than a baseball strike. That’s what got me hooked to golf,” he said.
After hitting his ‘homerun’ golf shot, there was no turning back for Kobayashi as he spent most of his professional career developing his game in Japan before making the big move to join the Asian Tour Qualifying School in 2012.
The decision paid huge dividends as he posted one top-10 finish at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS before going on to claim an emotional victory at the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open on home soil in his rookie season.
“I have played many golf courses on the Asian Tour, some are extremely narrow while some are wide. We had a chance to play in many different countries. The Asian Tour has given me the exposure that I’m not able to experience in Japan,” said Kobayashi, who also qualified for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic from his Order of Merit rankings.
“It was my goal to play on the Asian Tour but I also wanted a victory in Japan. As the Panasonic Open is a co-sanctioned event, winning on both Tours at one go is like a dream come true and I’m very happy.”
Victory propelled him into the top-10 of the Asian Tour Order of Merit which earned him a spot in the lucrative US$6.1 million CIMB Classic sanctioned by the Asian Tour and US PGA Tour.
With his confidence soaring, Kobayashi was in contention at the Thailand Golf Championship but faded with a final round 75 to settle for tied 22nd place. His momentum spilled into the season-ending Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia which he needed a win to have an outside chance of winning the Order of Merit.
But with Thaworn Wiratchant making the halfway cut and putting on another consistent showing with a top-10 finish, Kobayashi settled for tied fifth place in the US$2 million event and a commendable fourth place on the final Order of Merit with a season’s haul of US$471,079. He was later named Rookie of the Year for 2012.
With the new season starting in 2013, Kobayashi is eager to prove that he truly is one of Asia’s best players. After all, how many players can boast of hitting his first ever golf shot which flew farther than a baseball strike?

Hua Hin, Thailand, January 16: Highly rated Bryce Easton of South Africa shot a superb nine-under-par 63 in ideal scoring conditions to share the opening round lead with French amateur Lionel Weber at the Asian Tour Qualifying School First Stage Section B on Wednesday.
Easton, a two-time winner in South Africa, and Weber were flawless in their campaign as they returned with seven birdies and one eagle at the Springfield Royal Country Club.
They hold a three-shot lead over David Palm of Sweden while Andrew Mclardy of South Africa was a further shot back.
At the Imperial Lakeview Resort and Golf Club, Koichi Kitamura of Japan carded an eight-under-par 64 to hold a one-shot lead over Australian amateur Daniel Bringolf.
Guy Woodman of England, who played in his first Asian Tour season last year but failed to retain his card, posted a 66 for third place.
After four rounds, the top 15% players from each venue will qualify for the all-important Final Stage which will be held at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club and Springfield Royal Country Club from January 23 to 26.

There have been too many! But I like to experience the win again. The last putt was probably the coolest.
Probably Avantha because that’s where I won but from a golf course perspective, I really enjoyed playing the Sentosa Golf Club (venue of the Barclays Singapore Open) as it’s such as wonderful and challenging venue.
January 14: Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee launched his 2013 campaign in a strong fashion with a third place finish at the Volvo Golf Champions in South Africa on Sunday.
The three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit champion shot rounds of 65, 68, 73 and 68 to finish two shots behind winner Louis Oosthuizen at the Durban Country Club. Thongchai earned
€131,300 for his fine effort in what was his first ever visit to South Africa.
The good result should see Thongchai improve on his current 80th position on the Official World Golf Ranking as he is hoping to break into the top-50 by the end of March to earn an invitation to the Masters Tournament.
Last week, countryman and current Asian Tour number one Thaworn Wiratchant was invited by Augusta National to play in the year’s first Major in April.
Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh finished tied 16th with rounds of 69, 70, 72 and 69 while South Africa’s Jbe Kruger, who finished third on the Order of Merit last season, settled for a share of 32nd place.
January 13: Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand remained in contention at the Volvo Golf Champions but will need a super effort to narrow down third round leader Scott Jamieson’s five-shot advantage.
Thongchai, who is tied second courtesy of an opening round 65 and second round 68, struggled to find the spark in his round as he returned with a one-over-par 73 for a 10-under-par 206 total.
The three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit leader traded two birdies on holes two and three against three other bogeys at the Durban Country Club as he trails Jamieson of Scotland.
Thongchai is currently 79th in the world and a win on Sunday could potentially move him into the top-50 which is required for players to qualify for the Masters.
Meanwhile Jeev Milkha Singh of India carded a 73 for tied 11th place.

Hua Hin, Thailand, January 17: India’s Rashid Khan, Pelle Edberg of Sweden and Australian Kunal Bhasin are among those who kept their Asian Tour cards bid alive in the second round of the Qualifying School First Stage Section B on Thursday.
However, the story of the day belonged to Matt Johnston of Canada who posted a six-under-par 66 for a two-shot lead over Australian amateur Daniel Bringolf at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club.
Johnston registered an 11-under-par 133 total while highly rated Khan, aiming for a spot in the Qualifying School Final Stage presented by Sports Authority of Thailand for the third consecutive year, was a further eight shots back in tied eighth place.
A total of 83 players made the halfway cut at Imperial Lakeview with the cut set at six-over-par 150.
At the Springfield Royal Country Club, French amateur Lionel Weber and South African Bryce
Easton kept their noses in front for the second straight day.
The duo fired matching three-under-par 69s to lead on 12-under-par 132 while former European Tour player Edberg, who registered a 64, was a further shot back.
After losing his Asian Tour card in 2012, Bhasin is aiming for a swift return on the region’s elite circuit as he shot a 70 for tied 11th place.
A total of 81 players made the halfway cut which was set at six-over-par 150.
After four rounds, the top 15% players from each venue will qualify for the all-important Final Stage which will be held at Imperial Lakeview and Springfield Royal next week.
The top-40 and ties from the Final Stage will earn playing rights on the new 2013 Asian Tour season.

Kuala Lumpur, January 16: Masanori Kobayashi’s career is soaring to new heights on the Asian Tour which mirrors the first golf shot he struck.
Like most Japanese teenagers, Kobayashi aspired to become a professional baseball player but switched allegiance to golf when his uncle introduced him to the game when he was 13.
Kobayashi needed to strike only one shot at the driving range for his fate to be sealed. “It was when I hit the golf ball for the first time. I hit it very well and the ball flew further than a baseball strike. That’s what got me hooked to golf,” he said.
After hitting his ‘homerun’ golf shot, there was no turning back for Kobayashi as he spent most of his professional career developing his game in Japan before making the big move to join the Asian Tour Qualifying School in 2012.
The decision paid huge dividends as he posted one top-10 finish at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS before going on to claim an emotional victory at the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open on home soil in his rookie season.
“I have played many golf courses on the Asian Tour, some are extremely narrow while some are wide. We had a chance to play in many different countries. The Asian Tour has given me the exposure that I’m not able to experience in Japan,” said Kobayashi, who also qualified for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic from his Order of Merit rankings.
“It was my goal to play on the Asian Tour but I also wanted a victory in Japan. As the Panasonic Open is a co-sanctioned event, winning on both Tours at one go is like a dream come true and I’m very happy.”
Victory propelled him into the top-10 of the Asian Tour Order of Merit which earned him a spot in the lucrative US$6.1 million CIMB Classic sanctioned by the Asian Tour and US PGA Tour.
With his confidence soaring, Kobayashi was in contention at the Thailand Golf Championship but faded with a final round 75 to settle for tied 22nd place. His momentum spilled into the season-ending Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia which he needed a win to have an outside chance of winning the Order of Merit.
But with Thaworn Wiratchant making the halfway cut and putting on another consistent showing with a top-10 finish, Kobayashi settled for tied fifth place in the US$2 million event and a commendable fourth place on the final Order of Merit with a season’s haul of US$471,079. He was later named Rookie of the Year for 2012.
With the new season starting in 2013, Kobayashi is eager to prove that he truly is one of Asia’s best players. After all, how many players can boast of hitting his first ever golf shot which flew farther than a baseball strike?

Hua Hin, Thailand, January 16: Highly rated Bryce Easton of South Africa shot a superb nine-under-par 63 in ideal scoring conditions to share the opening round lead with French amateur Lionel Weber at the Asian Tour Qualifying School First Stage Section B on Wednesday.
Easton, a two-time winner in South Africa, and Weber were flawless in their campaign as they returned with seven birdies and one eagle at the Springfield Royal Country Club.
They hold a three-shot lead over David Palm of Sweden while Andrew Mclardy of South Africa was a further shot back.
At the Imperial Lakeview Resort and Golf Club, Koichi Kitamura of Japan carded an eight-under-par 64 to hold a one-shot lead over Australian amateur Daniel Bringolf.
Guy Woodman of England, who played in his first Asian Tour season last year but failed to retain his card, posted a 66 for third place.
After four rounds, the top 15% players from each venue will qualify for the all-important Final Stage which will be held at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club and Springfield Royal Country Club from January 23 to 26.

€131,300 for his fine effort in what was his first ever visit to South Africa.
The good result should see Thongchai improve on his current 80th position on the Official World Golf Ranking as he is hoping to break into the top-50 by the end of March to earn an invitation to the Masters Tournament.
Last week, countryman and current Asian Tour number one Thaworn Wiratchant was invited by Augusta National to play in the year’s first Major in April.
Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh finished tied 16th with rounds of 69, 70, 72 and 69 while South Africa’s Jbe Kruger, who finished third on the Order of Merit last season, settled for a share of 32nd place.

January 13: Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand remained in contention at the Volvo Golf Champions but will need a super effort to narrow down third round leader Scott Jamieson’s five-shot advantage.
Thongchai, who is tied second courtesy of an opening round 65 and second round 68, struggled to find the spark in his round as he returned with a one-over-par 73 for a 10-under-par 206 total.
The three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit leader traded two birdies on holes two and three against three other bogeys at the Durban Country Club as he trails Jamieson of Scotland.
Thongchai is currently 79th in the world and a win on Sunday could potentially move him into the top-50 which is required for players to qualify for the Masters.
Meanwhile Jeev Milkha Singh of India carded a 73 for tied 11th place.
